The Mercury were able to take the first game of the season series from the Storm with a strong performance at home on Wednesday night. Tina Charles led Phoenix by posting her first double-double of the season, leading her team with 22 points, while grabbing 11 boards. Jewell Lloyd was exceptional in the losing effort for the Storm, leading the floor with 26 points.

The Storm have sort of stumbled out of the gates over the first week of the regular season. Despite many believing a drop-off was inevitable for a team that has been hanging around the top of the league’s standings over the last few seasons, Seattle has been victorious in just one of their first three games. That came when they handled the Minnesota Lynx on opening night last Friday.

The aforementioned Tina Charles is going to be key if the Mercury want to make another deep run in the playoffs. With the indefinite absence of start forward Brittney Griner, Charles will be the team’s go-to for production at both ends of the floor.

With their win on Wednesday night, the Mercury have back-to-back wins over the Storm, as Phoenix was the ones who eliminated Seattle in the second round in last year’s playoffs.
